Try these healthy ways to detox your body. You have probably heard of a few cleanses like: The Master Cleanse, The Juice Cleanse, The Eat-Nothing-But-Asparagus-or-Something-like-that-Cleanse.
The choices are plentiful, expensive and difficult to adhere to (a diet of only lemon juice and maple syrup for two solid weeks? – no thanks). Here are a few simple, inexpensive ways
Start your morning off right.
Squeeze a slice of lemon into hot water in place of your morning coffee or tea. Because your body is in “detox mode” in the mornings, why not capitalize on it? The lemon juice helps rid the liver of toxins, which could otherwise be absorbed by the body.
Get movin
Recent studies have shown that being sedentary for long periods of time can be deadly! Try taking brisk 5 minute walks around the office, or dash up a few flights of stairs 2-3 times during the work day to offset all that sitting. And if you’re not easily embarrassed, jumping jacks and running in place are fantastic cubicle/office exercises! Push-ups anyone?
Don’t fake it
Goodbye, artificial sweeteners! These chemical concoctions do nothing but damage to your body, slowing down the healing process and loading your system with harmful, cancer-causing agents. If your sweet tooth needs satiation (we get it!), opt for natural sweeteners such as Stevia or Agave nectar – neither of which will spike your blood sugar or pollute that beautiful body of yours.
Phenoxyethanol? Ethylhexylglycerin?
Look at the ingredients label of your moisturizer: you’ll probably be astounded as to the uncanny length of the words you don’t understand, comprehend or even recognize. C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer? Huh? That’s probably because your moisturizer is loaded with chemically manufactured ingredients. Here’s the catch: your skin is your body’s largest organ – much of what you put on your skin is absorbed into your system…meaning those 67-character ingredients end up inside your body. To detox naturally, skip the artificial moisture. Our rule? Go natural. Even better rule? If you wouldn’t eat it, don’t put in on your skin. We use coconut oil to de-alligator our hides, olive oil, grape seed, safflower and almond oils are also excellent alternatives. And did we mention that (over time) they’re cheaper, too?
Go Organic, When Possible.
You’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a million times: organically grown foods (produced without the use of harmful chemical fertilizers, hormones or pesticides) are better for you, and the planet. Yes, this is true, but for those of us watching our budgets, it’s not always possible. But here’s the good news: some organic foods are just as cheap, (if not cheaper) than their conventional counterparts. Look for organic canned beans, corn, tomatoes, tomato sauce and fresh lettuce. Other cheap organic products include dried pasta, breads, milk and yogurt. By making a few organic swaps, you can greatly reduce the amount of chemicals, hormones and other cancer-causing agents in your diet.
